we shared our flight from kathmandu to bangkok with about twenty poeple from nepal who obviously never in their lives have set foot onto an airplane before. they were like children in front of a christmas tree, eyes wide in amazement, giggling and fooling around in sheer joy. next to slavica there sat a young woman, a little pale around her nose and shivering with excitement. the security flight instructions were very attentively followed by the new-flyers and i'm sure that there has never been given more concentration to the flight attendants as on this flight. they must have felt like the crew of a famous musical on broadway at a long awaited premiere. as soon as the plane took off the young woman beside slavica grabed her arm in panic, as if in the face of death. we calmed her down, tried to distract her and that worked out pretty well, at least until touch down in bangkok.
in kathmandu, the natural road from our hotel to the airport led us through chicken shaks, roadholes as big as kitchen tables, so we were in shock, arriving at almost futuristic bangkok, sitting in a softly humming cab like in a space shuttle, doing more than 150 an hour and nowhere any chicken or cows to be seen on the perfect road to downtown. from stoneage to modern times in less than four hours, it just took our breaths. the lady cab driver explained to us, that because of the red shirt protests, the airport had been as empty as ever, we couldn't know, for us it was just a real lot of poeple after nepal. our friend marcel, who lives in bangkok, had explained to me before on the phone, that these protests were nothing else but a rather peaceful expression of democratic rights by way of a really big folk festival that he visited every day, since he is living in the midst of it in downtown bangkok. however that was weeks before the illegal government started to enforce its idea of democracy in a blody way.
when we were there, we took a picture of the peaceful protests from the top of the highest building in bangkok and walked through the area; all quiet and without any aggression.
with marcel on the sky-train, under which the peaceful protests happened.

at the same time there also was the thai new year celebrations, where it is custom to first cream up everyone on the streets with powder and then throw water on him until he's soaking wet or the other way around, doesn't matter, main thing is, there's powder and water endlessly:

we stayed on for about a week, enjoyed the city life with all its aspects like for example having the old skin on our feet eaten away by little fish,

and of course we had to have a look at the most infamous red-light-district of bangkok, where the great music of a young band inspired us much more than all the ping-pong shows that were offered there and ranged on the erotical scale somewhere between reading newspapers and a tonsillectomy.

als wichtiger teil bangkoks durfte natürlich ein besuch des gigantischen week-end markets mit seinen über 8'000 verkaufsständen im norden der stadt nicht fehlen, was eine fast physische qual ist, wenn man nicht einkaufen darf, weil ja die reise weitergeht und das gepäck so schmal wie möglich gehalten werden sollte. um sich den kaufrausch abzugewöhnen betrachteten wir also gleich zu beginn so bedenkliche bilder wie dieses hier:not only in the redlight district, practically everywhere in bangkok you find the omnipresent picture of western gentlemen, somewhere between midlife-crisis and apparent death, shoving young asian women the age of their doughters or even grandchildren through the streets while holding hands. slavica with her slightly more than twenty years was a harsh exception as well as me, the seemingly only western guy without asian company. when looking into the guys eyes i registered scepticism, even a slight uncertainness, as in childrens eyes, when they are caught redhanded nicking sweeties. after a week of bangkok, this picture doesn't belong to my esthetical preferences, even though i don't allow myself any judgement on the matter.
as an important part of bangkok, the visit to the gigantic week-end markets with over 8'000 sales-shops in the north of the city couldn't be missed, even though it almost felt like a physical torture not to be allowed to do shopping there because the travel goes on and your luggage is not supposed to grow in weight on the way. to hold back the shopping mood as much as possible, we started our tour with such questioable impressions like the following:
und gingen dann über zum impressionen-shoppen.
and then went on to do some impression-shopping.
bitte pause, und was zu rauchen.....
please give me a break and some smoke....
until after hours i just can't go on any longer! (at least me, i can't)
and only massive kissing can prevent my misic from shopping.
so we ended our visit in temporary revolutionary bangkok with a last dinner together with marcel and wienerschnitzel and even aromat, as you can see, and temperatures of 40 degrees in the shade.
at eight o'clock p.m. a rumbling train left the bangkok railway station, screeched and shrieked through the parts of the city that were occupied by the redshirts, on its way through the night to vientiane, laos with us in the restaurant waggon before we crawled into the berth, where i had to firm up myself with arms and feet in order not to crash down from the top bed onto the floor deep down below. but more of that the next time.
but before we say good-bye now for this post, i have to admit to you, dear friends, that we actually miss you a lot from time to time. once in while some melancholical dreams sneak into the delusion of movement that we travellers share and those dreams i want to take into account honestly. from there the idea grew to turn back the wheel of time a bit and catch up on something that actually could have been on our first post: our farewell party. why not? we glimpse back and it really feels good, i tell ya!
first of all our dear friend soka, offering the platform for this story within her cambodjan take out restaurant spontaneously and who exploded into our hearts as a real friend in no time. and here some snapshots we enjoy after melancholy dreams to chase them away.
so again, dear friends, we send you all our love and good thoughts from the planet, that is as always quite wonderful, once you stop believing the tv-news.
