and on we go... shortly after the lao-cambodjan border a young couple with a broken-down bike made our bus stop and the personnel get out and help them; they took the machine apart, untill it fit underneath in the storeroom, tried to start and... realized, that now the engine of the bus wouldn't start anymore.

with so many passengers no problem at all; we played motor-starters and pushed the damned thing, till the engine cought and we could all get in the bus again. we met, had fun, laughed together, how nice, if a brake down of a bus would look that way in europe, but i have some slight doupts:
wieder ein paar eindrücke on the road by slavica:
and again some nice impressions on the road by slavica:
in the capital phnom penh we went on sweating ferociously which didn't hinder us to enjoy the place and to marvel at the intricacies of life here.

at one of the main arteries, the sisowath, at a sidearm of the mekong, enjoyed street cafe atmosphere, even though the picture was affected by beggars with one, sometimes both legs missing, reminding us of the millions of contact land mines planted during the vietnam war, that are still laying around great areas of cambodja. a scientific study clarified, that it would take another 100 years to detect and disarm these mines, if proceeded at the same speed as it is done up to now. we invited some of these victimes to our table for a dinner and received another impression of a big part of this population. we could only admire their stoical way of enduring such a fate. here another table with dutch friends. we solved all the problems of the world in one long evening, knowing that this encounter was as unique as the incredible coincidence to meet each other on this planet in the middle of the universe at this time out of billions of years passed and coming.

and here a really happy mouse after having sung all partisan-songs from titos times in a phnom penh taxi to the great pleasure of the taxi-driver, who didn't understand a thing but was having a lot of fun with it.

the first time travelling without bus-photo, but our craving for the sea was bigger so we headed straight to sihanoukville, six hours of bus ride in boiling heat. i had this youthful backpackers feeling for a small little hut directly at the sea and without aircon. after a really loud night (i dreamt i was a wave, thundering along..) thousands of mosquitos fat as bumblebees, thumbsize cockroaches and a ventilator louder even than the sea i had to succumb to the fact: WINNETOU IS DEAD. the backpacker inside me as well and slavica replied: and his wife too. we packed in a hurry and sped off to a hotel, where we dedicated a little temple to the gods of aircon and never moved away from it until dark, when the heat subsided a bit. here a pic of the bungalow before that, note the spaceous stability of the shak:

only after three hotel changes we calmed down in our heat nervosity, realizing that this is the way it is here, basta. we also started to understand, that only crazy poeple come to this place at this time of the year... it is hot, the sea is boiling and giving you anything but a cool swim and if you're no camel, you are in trouble.

don't be mislead, for cambodjans this outfit is appropriate, no matter what kind of temperatures are cooking. at the same time, this also represents a bathing suit, since cambodjans take a dip only in clothes like this. what's remarkable though is the fact, that this lady represents a restaurant at the same time. the part in front of her is the kitchen with an always gleaming barbecue waiting for delicious squid-skewers to be laid upon. we tried it out and became suckers for this kind of gastronomy!

a holiday weekend for cambodjans to celebrate the sovereigns birthday and the crowd from phnom penh are flooding the beaches. strange worlds, but always smiling and gentle. these guys really enjoy to be together.

one evening strolling the beach, we got invited spontaneously from a group of young cambodjans to join their group dancing. since we didn't catch it on film, here an example of how something like that looks and feels like; cambodjan feeling of life - just tender:
und das vor dieser kulisse.
and all of that in front of this setting.
ok, we still have to work on that smile today...

what an ice cube..., but where to begin?

dayly monk's ritual. it is a great honour to offer food to a buddhist monk.

den kat musste ich einfach ausprobieren.
i just had to try out this cat.

na das ist jetzt aber ein lächeln.
well, that's a smile now.
and again, bonds of friendship are welded; as much from the heart as shortlived, sometimes it really hurts to always have to move on; travellers blues.

walking in line through a brown, intransparent mangrove-swamp up to your chin and a bavarian guy leading the whole operation: that's what i call pure universal trust!
hier das ganz noch ein wenig anschaulicher:
and here the whole thing a bit more close:
a real strong gust of back home we could enjoy with fränzi and sascha from basel. a real swamp-encounter flowering water lilies.

the travel to the island of mangrove-swamp was a trip to paradise.
the last thundering beats of the farewell rockparty onboard still resounding inside, you can dance even with bananas...

das barpersonal wird immer jünger...
ever younger bar staff...
nice impression of a rare sympathy; two groups of poeple rarely hugging so intimate...
one of sihanouvils highlights for us: one day hundreds of monks visited the beach...
and had their fun like everybody else, who says spirituality excludes fun? perhaps fun IS spirituality.
so they took a very unmonkish bath in the hot sea. they enjoyed greatly and the impressions were just too beatiful, it's not seen everyday...
after a bit longer than two weeks we moved on in the hope for a small breeze and left cambodja even without having visited angkor wat, a capital sin, but when you're sweating nonstop as we did... and apart of that, angkor is running nowhere, we can catch up on that later, after being sure to revisit laos as well as cambodja sometime in the future.
and once again, it is time to say good-bye and send you, our dear friends in the world, many greetings and good thoughts.
charly and slavica
